Xander Sumpton's Doctoral Research
Most research on computer graphics focuses on making visuals look as realistic as possible. But realism isn’t the only way people experience virtual worlds effectively. This research explores how different visual styles, not realism alone, can influence how people think, feel, and make decisions in virtual reality.

The research compares two visual approaches: highly stylised graphics and neutral visuals. Participants are asked to make a moral choices, allowing the study to observe how visual style affected emotional engagement, sense of presence, and ethical decision-making.

These insights help designers, developers, and storytellers create virtual environments that feel immersive and emotionally authentic, without relying solely on cutting-edge hardware or extreme realism.
